NameSake
Bulk file renaming for iPhone, iPad and Mac
Privacy Policy
Effective October 26, 2026
In short: NameSake doesn't collect any information about you. Everything happens on your device, and nothing is sent to us or to anyone else.
Information we collect
None. NameSake has no accounts, sign-in, analytics, advertising, tracking or third-party services, and it doesn't connect to the internet. We never receive your files, file names or any other information from the app.
Your files and folders
- NameSake can only see folders you choose, either in the folder picker or by dragging a folder onto the app on a Mac.
- It reads file names, sizes and dates to show and sort the preview, and makes thumbnails and Quick Look previews on your device.
- Renaming happens only on your device, only when you tap Run. NameSake doesn't change file contents.
- If a folder is stored in iCloud Drive or another cloud service, renamed files sync through that service as with any other change you make to your files. That service's own privacy policy applies.
What's stored on your device
To make the app work, NameSake keeps a small amount of information in its own storage on your device:
- Your recent folders (up to 8), so they can reopen without the folder picker.
- For each recent folder, a record of the last rename (old and new file names, and the rules used), so it can be undone later.
- Your display preferences, such as List, Icons or Details view.
This information stays on your device and is never sent anywhere. You can remove it with Clear Recents or by deleting the app.
Children
NameSake doesn't collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above. If NameSake ever starts collecting information, we'll say so here before it does.

Getting started
- Choose a folder. On iPhone and iPad, tap Choose Folder and pick a folder in the Files app. On a Mac, drag a folder onto the window or click Choose Folder.
- Pick what to change: Whole Name, Beginning, End, or Beginning and End.
- Set your rules and check the live preview. It shows every new name next to the current one.
- Tap Run and confirm. On a Mac, the renamed files then open in Finder.
Common questions
Can I undo a rename?
Yes. Tap Undo in the message that appears after a Run, or later from the Recent list on the start screen, even after closing the app. Each recent folder keeps its last rename.
Why weren't some files restored when I undid a rename?
Before undoing, NameSake checks the folder. Files that were renamed, moved, deleted or replaced since the rename are left alone, as are files whose original name is now used by another file. NameSake tells you how many will be skipped before it undoes the rest.
Which files get renamed?
Every visible file directly inside the folder you chose. Folders inside it, and hidden files, are left alone. File extensions such as .jpg are never changed.
Why is the Run button greyed out?
- No name would change yet. For example, you haven't chosen what to change, or haven't entered any text.
- A file is flagged in red: two files would get the same name, a name clashes with another file in the folder, or a name contains a character that isn't allowed, such as "/" or ":".
How do I preview a file?
On a Mac, select a file and press Space. On iPhone and iPad, touch and hold a file, then tap Quick Look.
Does it work with iCloud Drive and other cloud folders?
Yes. Choose the folder in the Files app as usual. The renamed files sync through your cloud service like any other change.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 or later, and Mac with macOS 26 or later.
